As an optical lens manufacturer with 15 years of experience, we answer many customer questions daily, and the difference between SP(spheric) and ASP(aspheric) lenses is one of the most frequently asked.
Our clients are usually experienced in the optical lens industry, but they also have questions about this issue, which is why this article addresses this topic.
We hope to help more users clearly understand the differences between these two types of lenses, so that distributors, wholesalers, and optical shop buyers can make informed decisions about which type of lens to choose.
1. Thickness Difference
SP lenses, optical lens manufacturers call them spherical lenses. They are typically thicker. They are often used by users who don’t have strict requirements for lens thickness.
ASP lenses, lens suppliers call them aspheric lenses. For the same index, they are thinner than SP lenses and are suitable for users who require thinner lenses.

2. Different Lateral Curvature
When you have both SP lens and ASP lens in, you can easily find the difference by observing their sides. The SP lens has a more pronounced curvature when viewed from the side.
Conversely, the ASP lens has a less pronounced curvature.
The image below clearly shows the difference.

3. Different Distortion Levels
Distortion level is also an important indicator distinguishing SP and ASP lenses. Spherical lenses, due to their greater curvature, will show more noticeable distortion at the edges.
However, ASP lenses with their smoother design, do not exhibit significant distortion at the edges.
you can see this difference if you watch our video below carefully.
4. Price Difference
SP and ASP lenses differ in thickness, distortion, and curvature due to their different optical structures. These differences lead to price variations.
While SP lenses offer a slightly inferior user experience, they are more lower in price. ASP lenses are thinner and have less distortion, providing a better visual experience, and therefore are more expensive.
5.Do all lenses have SP and ASP optical designs?
It’s worth noting that not all lenses have both SP and ASP optical designs. This is only available for low index lenses.
Currently, 1.49 index lenses are only available in SP lenses. 1.56 and 1.591 index lenses are available in both SP and ASP lenses.
For 1.61,1.67,1.74 High index lenses are all ASP lenses.
6.Should you choose SP or ASP lens?
To choose between SP and ASP lenses, you can take into account the client’s actual needs, such as their preference for thinness, their emphasis on visual experience, and their budget.
This will allow you to accurately determine whether you need to purchase spheric lens or aspheric lens.
