In optical lens industry, there are clear classifications in optical lenses, but due to cultural differences between different countries, there may be some differences in the understanding of lens classification between optical lens suppliers and buyers.
In this article i will explain our factory classifications for lenses, hope to help more optical buyer have a clearer understanding.
We usually classify lenses into four main categories:
1.Finished lens
Finished lens is most used lenses in optical market, it is a complete lenses with the specific power. You just need to edging and installation into eyeglass frames.
The optical power and lens design are already formed during production, so customers generally do not need to perform further surface processing.
Now our finished lens include:
1.optical design: Single vision, bifocal, progressive lens
2.function: coated lens, blue cut lens, photochromic lens, photochromic blue cut lens,Anti-glare
Lenses, Polarized lens,Myopia control lenses
Because its power and functionality can meet most client’s needs, it is currently the most in-demand lens categories on the market.

2.Semi-finished lens
Semi-finished lens is different from the finished lenses, it has one optical surface already formed, the other surface is left for further RX processing.
This lens is usually purchased by the clients who have process machine, they can be processed into the power consumer needed.
For example, a manufacturer supply a 1.56 semi-finished lens blank with a particular front curve. An RX laboratory can then process the back surface according to the customer’s prescription.
The typical process can be simplified as:
Semi-Finished Blank → RX Processing → Prescription Lens
Semi-finished lenses are particularly useful for manufacturers and RX laboratories that need to produce customized prescriptions.
They offer greater flexibility because one type of semi-finished blank can be processed into many different prescriptions.

3. Sunglasses lens
Sunglasses lens are used to protect against ultraviolet rays when outdoor and not any power.
Based on function it can including: polarized sunglasses, tinted sunglasses, photochromic sunglasses and so on.
And it has many colors in option: yellow, red, green, gray, brown, blue, orange, purple. Furthermore, a lens can be made in both color or multi color.

4.Prescription lens
Prescription lens are lens manufactured according to a specific wearer’s optical prescription.
A prescription may include parameters such as:
- SPH (Sphere)
- CYL (Cylinder)
- AXIS
- ADD
- PD
- Prism
Unlike standard stock lenses, prescription lenses require the lens parameters to match the customer’s specific visual requirements.
Now we offer many designs in option, and currently we use Optotech and IOT technologies. We can provide customized solutions to meet the specific needs of different clients.
Hopefully, the above information can help buyers understand the different aspects of optical lenses.
