Do you know the dangers of high myopia?

  • October 27, 2021
  • Knowledge

Nowadays, most of the myopia patients may not have the concept of high myopia, including many high myopia patients. They think that they are myopia patients as well, and they also wear glasses, but the lenses are a little thicker than others. Even if it is low to moderate myopia patients, if it is not prevented and not paying attention to the habit of using eyes, it is very likely to develop into high myopia in future!

The change of refractive power in patients with long-term high myopia will cause the eyes to be in a state of myopia, which will lead to pathological myopia. In high myopia, lacquer cracks and atrophy of the retina in the fundus of myopia indicate a poor prognosis of vision. In some cases, subretinal neovascular membrane is in danger, and central vision will be locally decreased.

High degree of myopia hazards and complications: First, the opacity of the vitreous body, the degeneration of the choroid and the retina due to abnormal ocular structures and nutritional disorders. Second, macular degeneration atrophy and posterior grape swelling due to eye axis extension, sclera elongation, and abnormal biomechanical effects. Third, amblyopia and strabismus due to low vision and dysfunction of adjustment and convergence.

The dangers of high myopia:

  1. Common and slightly more intense sports, such as diving, basketball, football, and sudden braking, may cause retinal detachment.
  2. Patients with high myopia cannot leave their eyes and other auxiliary equipment at all times. Once they are detached, their eyes will be foggy. It is recommended not to use a lot of spicy, alcoholism, and eye congestion.
  3. Medically speaking, the dangersof high myopia will not only affect daily life, but also bring many complications to patients, such as retinal detachment, cataracts, macular hemorrhage, macular degeneration, vitreous liquefaction, glaucoma, etc. High, the more likely it will cause complications, and the more serious it will lead to blindness and eye atrophy.
  4. It is not recommended to wear contact lenses for highly myopic eyes, because patients with high myopia cannot do without vision aids, and basically rely heavily on them for 14-18 hours a day. Contact lenses should be removed, replaced, cleaned, disinfected, etc., and eyeballs need to be properly given Breathable and moist, easy to be infected, light glasses are recommended to be more convenient and practical.
  5. The chance of passing myopia to the next generation increases. If both parents are high myopia, the child will basically inherit it.

Common types of complications of high myopia:

  1. Posterior scleral staphylo: the incidence rate was 77.1%. It is mainly manifested as the posterior pole of the eyeball expands backward, the optic nerve and the retina around the macula are degeneration and atrophy, and the corrected vision is decreased. The higher the degree of myopia, the higher the incidence of posterior scleral staphyma.
  2. Retinal atrophy and degeneration, hemorrhage and tears: Due to the lengthening of the eye axis and posterior scleral staphyma, patients with high myopia are prone to retinal degeneration and tears, which can cause bleeding and retinal detachment, leading to blindness.
  3. Subretinal neovascularization: the incidence rate is 5%-40%. It manifests as new blood vessels under the retina in the posterior pole, causing bleeding and affecting vision.
  4. Retinal detachment, cataract, and glaucoma: Due to sclera expansion and retinal degeneration, the chance of retinal detachment in patients with high myopia is 7-8 times higher than that of non-high myopia. The chance of high myopia complicated by cataract and glaucoma is also higher than normal.
  5. Floaters: high myopia can cause true vitreous degeneration or liquefaction, causing obvious floaters. Consciously see light, sparks, flashes or dark shadows drifting in front of you.

If you are not a myopia patient, congratulations! If you are already low-grade myopia, it is very important to prevent and control myopia. Don’t let yourself become high-grade myopia! If you are already highly myopic, then you need to protect your eyes. There is also super high myopia behind high myopia, which is more harmful to the eyes! Please pay attention to the importance of preventing and controlling myopia.
